I've been hard at work on a new novel that should be finished sometime this year. Departing from speculating on the future as I did in Beyond Earth, I've turned to speculate on the past. The story explores the legendary figure we know of as Saint Nicholas. For those who didn't know, he was a real historical person, and he lived around the turn of the fourth century AD. Most of us know of him as the inspiration for Santa Claus, but the real man proves to be far more fascinating than the fairy tale of Christmas (which, by the way, he probably never celebrated).
I find the challenge in writing historical fiction to be much the same as in science fiction (as opposed to science fantasy): The speculation and drama must be fitted into a background of facts. And that's what makes this story so compelling. Whether you've heard the legends of Nicholas or not, I think in this novel you'll see Nicholas and his times in a way you've never them before.
